Officiating Criticism

By: Justin Gincauskas

It looks like Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid will have to pay for their officiating criticism after last week’s loss to the Bills.

According to Pro Football Talk, the NFL has fined Mahomes and Reid, although the amounts have yet to be disclosed.

The fines come after Mahomes and Reid expressed their frustrations about the offside call against Kadarius Toney. Toney, who clearly lined up offside during the snap, caught the ball via a Travis Kelce lateral before running in for the touchdown. The 49-yard touchdown pass would have given the Chiefs the lead with under a minute and a half to play.

Mahomes was furious on the sideline at the end of the game and even voiced his displeasure about the call to Bills quarterback Josh Allen as they met up on the field after the game.

In the postgame press conference, Reid let the refs have it.

“I never use any of this as excuses, but normally I get a warning before something like this happens in a big game. A bit embarrassing in the National Football League for that to take place,” Reid said. “I’ve been in the league a long time and I haven’t had one like that.”

Mahomes spoke after Reid and had similar comments on the call.

“There was no warning throughout the entire game,” Mahomes said. “Then you wait until there’s a minute left in the game to make a call like that? It’s tough. Lost for words. It’s tough. Regardless if we win or lose, just the end of another game and we’re talking about the refs. It’s just not what we want for the NFL and for football.”

Whether you agree that the officials should have given a warning or not, it is clear that Toney was lined up offside on the play. The officiating criticism from Reid and Mahomes was over the top, and with the fine, it looks like the NFL agrees.
