After picking up two centers this offseason, the Los Angeles Lakers have made traded Marc Gasol to the Memphis Grizzlies.
The move that sends Gasol, a 2024 second round pick, and cash to the Grizzlies. In return, they receive the draft rights to Wang Zhelin and saves Los Angeles $10 million. Memphis will waive the veteran so he can remain in Spain with his family.
Gasol spent just one season with the Lakers. He started for 42 games before being moved to the bench and seeing little playing time after they acquired Andre Drummond. Los Angeles picked up Dwight Howard and DeAndre Jordan, leading to Gasol’s trade.
He signed with the Lakers last offseason after spending the previous season and a half with the Toronto Raptors. Gasol arrived in Toronto via trade. It brought him to a team already built around Kawhi Leonard, Kyle Lowry, Serge Ibaka, Danny Green, and some young pieces. This pushed the team over the top and led to them winning the NBA Finals in his first season.
Deja Vu: Marc Gasol Traded to Memphis for Second Time
The Grizzlies will not keep the veteran center around, waiving him before he arrives. The circumstances of this trade are far different than the first time he was traded from Los Angeles to Memphis.
The Lakers drafted Gasol in the 2007 NBA Draft and traded him the following season for his brother, Pau Gasol, to the Grizzlies. He spent over 10 seasons in Memphis with three All-Star selections and the 2012-13 Defensive Player of the Year.
