It’s been obvious that the Marlins were going to be sellers since they moved Luis Arraez earlier this season. With the trade deadline just a few short weeks a way. MLB Insider Jon Morosi confirmed that the Marlins could look to trade Jazz Chisholm Jr. at the trade deadline. Chisholm hasn’t developed into the Superstar that he seemed on track to become. He’s still 26 years old and could help spark a lineup for any team in the pennant race.
It’s not a sure bet that Chisholm gets traded, but Peter Bendix seems likely to tear down the Marlins roster. Jazz Chisholm won’t become a free agent until 2026, so there’s no rush to trade him. The market for a player of Chisholm’s caliber is still to be determined. Some teams will view him as a centerfielder, while others will look to move him back to second. There may be a few more who look to use him in both the infield and outfield.
Chisholm comes with a big personality. There’s nothing wrong with that, he wants to win which is understandable. But clubs will have to consider how he’ll fit in with the rest of the team. With all of that acknowledged, here are three potential landing spots for Chisholm if he’s moved at the deadline.
Seattle Mariners
By now, you should be aware of the Mariners’ situation. They have a World Series-caliber pitching staff and a bottom-five offense. It’s clear that Dipoto and co. need to bolster the Mariners lineup for the M’s to hold onto their lead in the AL West.
The Mariners are obviously set in Center field with Julio Rodriguez, but they have needs elsewhere that Chisholm could fill. Offseason addition Jorge Polanco has struggled mightily this season. The double-mitch experiment between Mitch Haniger and Mitch Garver has been a flop as well.
The Mariners could place Chisholm at second or in a corner outfield spot. It’d be a big offensive upgrade over what they have right now. And he could light a fire under guys like Rodriguez, J.P. Crawford and Cal Raleigh.
New York Yankees
The Yankees may not be interested, but acquiring a player like Chisholm is certainly something they should consider.
Alex Verdugo has had some nice moments, but he’ll be a free agent this offseason. If the Yankees were to trade for Jazz Chisholm, they could slot him into center, allowing Aaron Judge to move back to the corners. They also could place him in the infield. Whether it be at third base or second, moving Gleyber Torres to third.
Pittsburgh Pirates
The Pirates are another team that has received sub-par offensive production at second base this season. They’ve called up former first-round pick Nick Gonzales, who has delivered league-average offense.
The Pirates outfield has struggled this season, hitting just .227/.299/.352 as a unit. Chisholm could provide an upgrade at either position.
