The New York Yankees have swung a trade to bring in Marlins 2B/CF Jazz Chisholm, and the Marlins will receive prospects Agustin Ramirez, Jared Serna, and Abrahan Ramirez in return. Chisholm, 26, will make his way to the Big Apple as a part of the second trade in his career as he was shipped from Arizona to Miami in exchange for Zac Gallen back in 2019. While Gallen has become a consistent NL CY Young candidate, Chisholm’s time in Miami has been successful but rocky. The former top-100 prospect will now hope to bring the much needed energy to a deflated Yankees lineup.
Significance For The Yankees
The Yankees started off the year hot but has since tailed off, most notably on offense. Chisholm has been around league average this year on both sides of the ball as he is slashing .249/.323/.407 (103 wRC+) with 1 OAA and -4 DRS in center field this year. The former middle infielder made the shift to centerfield during the 2023 season and has had mixed results defensively. He has however, shown the ability to play second base at a high level as he accrued 3 OAA in just 60 games in 2022, his lone All-Star campaign.
Chisholm’s role with the Yankees is not set yet as he could split time between the outfield and infield. With Alex Verdugo struggling mightily (56 wRC+ since June), slotting him to the bench while putting Juan Soto in left, Chisholm in center, and Aaron Judge in right seems like an ideal fit.
Alternatively, Chisholm could slide back into his original second base spot and split time with Gleyber Torres, who’s been a main stay at the second base position for the Yankees but is underperforming a bit this year (96 wRC+). New York would have to figure out their infield situation if they wish to play Chisholm at second as neither he or Torres has experience at third.
Overall, the addition of Jazz Chisholm will improve the Yankees lineup but should not be their only solution to their offense. The Yankees would have to add more pieces around Judge and Soto but the addition of Chisholm is a fantastic start.
Significance For The Marlins
Jazz Chisholm will join reliever A.J Puk as the first pair of Marlins to be shipped out of South Beach this trade deadline. With the trade of Luis Arraez earlier this year, it was clear that the Marlins are headed towards another rebuild. The return package consists of catcher Agustin Ramirez and infielders Jared Serna and Abrahan Ramirez.
Agustin Ramirez is the closest of the three to making an immediate impact on the big league roster as the 22 year old slugging catcher has already had a stint on the 40-man roster in AAA this year and slashed .290/.372/.570 in 58 games at Double-A. Scouts have pointed out his impressive power and contact abilities though they wonder if he would be able to stick behind the plate defensively. If there’s a place to find that out, it would be the rebuilding Marlins with not much to lose.
Jared Serena is also 22 years-old and was working on a very solid season in High-A prior to the trade. He slashed .253/.341/.444 in 88 games while slugging 13 home runs and stealing 11 bases. Serena also comes with possible defensive liabilities as Baseball America has mentioned that his relatively weak arm may indicate a future at second base rather than short stop.
The last piece in the trade, Abrahan Ramirez, is the youngest of the trio at just 19 years-old. He’s the most versatile of the bunch as he’s appeared at second base, short stop, and third base this year. He is still at the complex league and is hitting well with a .348/.447/.513 slash line.
The Marlins have received three very solid pieces in this trade and will continue to hoard prospects as the trade deadline continues.
Overall Expectations
While this is certainly a significant trade for the Yankees, Jazz Chisholm should not be their only move as their offense needs a much more impactful bat. He will be looking for a fresh start in the pinstripes as the Marlins look for a fresh start in a rebuild.
