The Chicago Bears are expected to keep current head coach Matt Eberflus for the 2024 season, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Chicago is currently in last place in the NFC North Division. They are guaranteed to finish with a losing record this season, sitting at 6-9 with two games remaining.
The Bears named Eberflus their head coach on Jan. 27, 2022. In his first season with the team, Eberflus led Chicago to a 3-14 record, the worst mark in the NFC. He has an overall record of 9-23 heading into Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons.
Matt Eberflus began his NFL coaching career in 2009 as a linebackers coach for the Cleveland Browns. In 2011, he joined the Dallas Cowboys staff and remained a linebackers coach until 2018. Eberflus then moved to the Indianapolis Colts as a defensive coordinator, where he stayed until getting the head coaching position in Chicago.
Due to the D.J. Moore trade, Chicago currently holds the 2024 first-overall pick through the Carolina Panthers. They also have their own pick, which is the ninth overall pick right now.
Eberflus’ job security looked shaky to start the year as the Bears started the season 0-4. However, the team has got into a groove as of late, winning four of its last six games. It looks like Chicago’s improvement from last year is enough to keep Eberflus in Chicago for at least one more season.
The biggest question surrounding the Bears remains, as they will be deciding whether to draft another quarterback. Chicago drafted Justin Fields 11th overall in 2021, but he has had an inconsistent run with the team to start his career. Fields has 15 touchdown passes and nine interceptions in 11 games this season. With multiple top picks at their disposal, the Bears will need to decide if Fields is their quarterback for the future or if it is time to move on.
