The Grizzlies vs. Lakers matchup was significant for both teams, but more so for Los Angeles. The LeBron-less Lakers needed a win Tuesday night as they close in on a potential playoff spot. Instead, they were routed by the Grizzlies, 121-109, on the heels of a masterful performance by Ja Morant.
The Grizzlies entered the game in second place in the West, looking to retain their position.
The game was a tale of two halves. The first half featured back-and-forth action between the two teams until Morant came to life and set the tone for the game. Despite missing two stars in D’Angelo Russell and LeBron James, the Lakers were able to take the lead at the half.
Ja Morant’s Historic Third Quarter
A franchise record for most points scored in a quarter was set by Morant, who made 10 of 12 shots from the field and eight of nine free throws in the quarter to score 28 points. The Lakers had no answer for Morant, who ended with 39 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in the contest.
Instead, he opted to do what he does best; get into the paint. There is no arguing with his athleticism or skills. It was his on-court swagger that set the tone for the game and his ability to control the paint.
Turnovers Hurt Lakers In James’ Absence
The Lakers committed 26 turnovers leading to 41 Grizzlies points. The Grizzlies created more opportunities to score and had more turnovers at the other end of the floor. Despite Anthony Davis ‘ quality efforts, with 28 points, 19 rebounds, and five blocked shots, the Lakers could not overcome the deficit in the matchup.
Despite the loss, the Lakers did not look like an outclassed team. Losing to the second seed in a relatively close game does not spell disaster for the franchise. The team will need to look toward the next game against the Thunder.
The Grizzlies poked fun at NFL Hall of Famer and Undisputed co-host Shannon Sharpe. The last time these teams met in Los Angeles, Sharpe got into a scuffle with a few Grizzlies players and Tee Morant, Ja Morant’s father. Sharpe’s incident seemed to inspire the team as the Lakers were able to take the win.
Playoff Picture
The win keeps Memphis firmly in second place. While, the loss puts Los Angeles a game back from the tenth spot. The latter must get back on track with a win against the Thunder in a back-to-back game on Wednesday night. Los Angeles will also hope for help from other teams in the West to hand out losses to teams directly in front of them. Otherwise, the Lakers will be dealt a blow, as they will have difficulty climbing back up in the standings.
