Entering last weekend’s play against Penn State, Michigan ranked number one in the nation. However, after the split series, they dropped in the rankings.
Michigan at Penn State- Game One
Before the game, Michigan’s star goaltender Erik Portillo decided to not play these two games due to an illness. This meant Noah West would make his Michigan debut in the goal. There was a lot of concern about how his debut would go but he ended up being Michigan’s best player this weekend. He stopped 46 of the 48 shots he faced.
Michigan was dominated by Penn State this entire game. They were outshot 40-17 making this the lowest shot attempt in the program’s history since 2017. Also, made it the first time since 2014 that Michigan hockey was shut out.
Adam Fantilli has scored in every single game so far this season. However, that ended as he was able to get a point during this game. He wasn’t even able to get a shot off.
Michigan at Penn State- Game 2
Michigan was finally able to score during this game. It came from Mackie Samoskevich on a power play. TJ Hughes gloved down a pass in front of the net and scored. This gave Michigan an early 2-0 lead.
During the second period, Samoskevich scored giving him his second of the night. This put him on hat trick watch early on. This goal gave Adam Fantilli an assist adding to his incredible freshman season.
However, in the third period, Penn State made this a close game. They scored their first goal with only 8 minutes left in the game. Then, they scored two quick goals tying the game. Penn State had many opportunities to take the lead but Noah West made some amazing saves to keep Michigan in and take this game to overtime.
Game 2 Overtime
Overtime didn’t look promising for Michigan as Penn State had all the momentum going in. However, 24 seconds in Adam Fantilli scored the game-winner. This made it Fantilli’s sixth multi-point game of the season. This win meant Penn State was no longer undefeated.
Michigan will play at Norte Dame tomorrow and Saturday night. Norte Dame is ranked at 18. Erik Portillo will likely play in this weekend’s series giving Michigan a good chance to sweep.
