Mike Trout and the Los Angeles Angels

Once again, Los Angeles Angels superstar Mike Trout has received bad news on the injury front. While on a rehab stint in Triple-A for a torn left meniscus that was operated on earlier this year, he suffered a setback in his recovery. After undergoing an MRI, the team found that his meniscus had been torn again.

On Thursday, Trout released a statement on X confirming that he will not return this year. “After months of hard work, I was devastated yesterday when an MRI showed a tear in my meniscus that will require surgery again — ending my hopes of returning this season,” he wrote.

Trout had appeared in 29 games this season before the initial injury, hitting 10 home runs with a .867 OPS. The 32-year-old three-time MVP has now been limited to 82 or fewer games in four of the last five seasons. While Trout is still a premier talent in the MLB when healthy, he has unfortunately built a lengthy injury history, including the back condition he developed in 2022.

When will Trout Return from Injury?

The 47-61 Angels will likely see Trout back on the field for Opening Day next season. Per CBS, players with meniscus tears in the 2022-23 MLB season missed an average of 67 days. Angels GM Perry Minaisan expects Trout to make not just a recovery to full strength, but improve as well. Alden Gonzalez of ESPN reported that Minaisan stated, “My call is he hits 70 homers and wins the MVP. Looking at his face, he might have the best year he’s ever had next year.”

While Trout becoming the second-best home run hitter of all time is unlikely, fans of the sport can still hope for a much-needed, overdue, healthy season for one of the most talented players in MLB history in 2025.
