The Atlanta Hawks made a big personnel move Tuesday with Nate McMillan released from his head coaching duties. Assistant coach Joe Prunty is now the interim head coach in McMillan’s absence. Prunty was the interim head coach after Jason Kidd was released from the Milwaukee Bucks five years ago.
The move comes after months of reported tension and concerns between the coaching, players, and front office. While the front office reportedly wanted McMillan to finish out the season at least, McMillan ultimately requested to be removed from the position.
The Hawks currently sit as the eighth seed in the East with a 29-30 record, but a second-half run is not out of the question. They have started searching for a new head coach, with the leading candidate being Quin Snyder. Snyder was the Utah Jazz head coach who most recently garnered plenty of success and playoff experience. He was also an assistant coach for the Hawks before his Jazz tenure.
Nate McMillan being released is expected to be the first of many moves in reshaping the Hawks as they move forward. With Trae Young already voicing his frustrations with the team, there is no time to waste. Their next moves will have an everlasting impact on their future.
