Now that we know the NBA Finals will be between the Dallas Mavericks and Boston Celtics, it’s time to break down the odds for Finals MVP. The Finals matchup between the two teams is set to begin on Thursday, June 6.
We know that Luka Doncic was named the Western Conference MVP after the Mavericks defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves. In the Eastern Conference, it was Jaylen Brown taking home the hardware. Heading into the Finals, Jayson Tatum leads the way as the favorite to take home the Bill Russell Trophy.
Jayson Tatum, Celtics, -120
It’s been pretty smooth sailing for Tatum and the Celtics this season especially, in the playoffs. The Celtics are the favorites to win it all this season. Tatum was pretty quiet in the first round of the playoffs but has ramped up his production since. The Sportsbooks are collectively choosing Tatum to show up when it matters most.
Even though, Brown took home the MVP award from the Eastern Conference Finals, Tatum had a fantastic showing with 26 points, 13 rebounds, and eight assists.
Luka Doncic, Mavericks, +210
The 25-year-old Slovenian scored 36 points in Game 5 to send the Mavs to the Finals. The overall series numbers for Doncic were impressive, as he averaged 32.4 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 8.2 assists per game. No matter where he goes, he never shies away from filling the stat sheets. I would expect more of that in the NBA Finals.
Jaylen Brown, Celtics, +600
A year ago, some would say that Brown dissapeared in the Eastern Conference Finals. Especially after his horrible outings against the Miami Heat. He averaged 19 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists in that series. He shot .138 from deep. This year though, it was quite the opposite. Brown averaged nearly 30 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists.
If Brown stays hot and the Celtics win, he could have a good shot of winning the NBA Finals MVP, aka the Bill Russell trophy.
Kyrie Irving, Mavericks, +2000
Out of all the favorites, Irving has the most Finals experience. He made it three times while he played with the Cleveland Cavaliers. He’ll be playing against a former team, so he’ll want to do well against the Celtics. That motivation could lead him to having a very impressive series. If it does and the Mavericks upset Boston, Irving would have a good chance at winning his first Finals MVP.
