On Tuesday, the Detroit Pistons announced that they were agreeing to a contract buy-out with backup center Nerlens Noel. The 28-year-old big man had been placed on Waivers ahead of the deadline. Therefore, allowing him to preserve his playoff eligibility. He has until Wednesday to sign with a new team to be eligible, however.

Noel was acquired in a draft-day deal from the Knicks and has played sparingly this season. The Pistons have been focused on giving playing time to their young players. He has only played in 14 games, averaging 2.3 PPG and 2.6 RPG in 10.9 MPG. Though, over the course of his career, the former first-round pick is averaging 7.2 PPG and 6.1 RPG through 22.1 MPG.

At this point, in his career Noel may not land a starting center position. Though, he has started 14 games over the last two seasons. However, he may most likely be a veteran insurance policy, in case of injuries to centers to playoff-contending teams.

Noel, who has played for also Philadelphia, Dallas and Oklahoma City, had a $9.24MM salary this season with a club option for $9.68MM next season. That team option will come off the Pistons’ books and this season’s cap hit also figures to be reduced slightly. Nerlens Noel reportedly wasn’t actively seeking out a buyout earlier this month but obviously changed his mind.

Now that he has cleared waivers, multiple teams are expected to be interested. Noel is the 10th player to be bought out since the trade deadline.
