One of the biggest stories in the offseason has been the impending legal troubles for Deshaun Watson. However, while the legal investigation continues, there have been no updates on the NFL’s inquiry. But, today, Sports Illustrated published an article detailing the problems with the NFL’s investigation.

Jenny Vrentas’s article has testimonies from two women and their experience with the NFL’s investigation. For the crimes, the women are accusing Watson of the women’s experience is not putting the NFL in the best view.

Ashley Solis is a massage therapist and the first woman to file a case against the Texans quarterback. She told Sports Illustrated the following,

“This woman asked me what I was wearing, which honestly really pissed me off, She explained that that’s something that she has to ask—which I don’t believe at all.”

The second woman mentioned in the article is Lauren Baxley, who is also a massage therapist and filing a suit against Watson. Baxley spoke on the difference in approach between the legal and NFL investigation,

“My forensic interview [with HPD] was very respectful and trauma-informed, They let me speak uninterrupted, whereas with Lisa Friel and the [other NFL investigator], they would cut me off, they would question things, they would circle back.”

What Does This Mean For The NFL?

For the NFL, these women’s experiences with league investigators are damaging to the league’s reputation. As in recent years, the NFL has cracked down on domestic violence. But, the claims in this article by two women accusing Watson of his crime and having a poor experience with the NFL, only one prominent conclusion can be made.

The NFL’s job, in this case, is to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter. The NFL should ask a wide range of questions pertaining thereto. But the league needs to realize with sensitive matters such as sexual assault and harassment, and it’s important to provide the accusers of Deshaun Watson a chance to be respectfully heard.

The league did comment on Sports Illustrated’s article saying the following,

“We are grateful to the women who came forward to share their experiences, and we recognize how difficult talking about these issues may be as we try to understand the facts of the matter.”
