The Baltimore Orioles will not be leaving Camden Yards anytime soon. The team announced Monday that they reached a new 30-year lease agreement with the State of Maryland to stay at Camden Yards.
After the Maryland Stadium Authority approved the lease extension earlier in the day, Maryland’s Board of Public Works voted 3-0 in favor of the extension to finalize the agreement. The lease was going to expire on Dec. 31.
Reactions From The Deal
Wes Moore, the Governor of Maryland, spoke about his excitement regarding the new lease agreement.
“This is a great day, and I am thrilled to tell you why,” Moore said at a news conference. “I want to say something that I have been waiting to say for a long time: Baltimore, the deal is done.”
Orioles Chairman and CEO John Angelos also conveyed similar feelings in his statement after the vote from the board.
“Our management group took the Orioles to the top of the league this season, and now, in partnership with Governor Wes Moore and his administration, they made this deal happen,” Angelos said. “Most importantly, I’m happy we can deliver on our promise to fans of keeping the Orioles here for 30 more years, marking the 100th season of the team in Baltimore.”
More About The Agreement
Though the deal extends the lease at Camden Yards for 30 years, there is an option to end it after 15 years if the Orioles do not receive approval from state officials for development plans for the surrounding areas by the ballpark. Baltimore has four years to reach an agreement for those plans.
The franchise has called Baltimore home since 1954, and with this deal, they will stay in the city for many years to come.
