Every year, Pro Football Focus puts together a list of the Top 10 coaches heading into the new season. Well, they just released their list heading into the 2023 season and there’s one problem. Pete Carroll is not on that list.
Now, yes you could argue that all of the coaches on the list are valid. However, Carroll got snubbed. The Seahawks traded away their “franchise quarterback” in Russell Wilson and ran with Geno Smith as the starter. Many fans and reporters alike had written Wilson’s successor off before the season had even started. Some went as far as to say that the Seahawks should’ve fired Pete Carroll. In fact, Wilson had asked for that to happen. Though, Smith did just fine in the system that Carroll runs. In fact, it was well enough that he earned Comeback player of the Year and earned a new contract.
Why does Carroll deserve to be there?
Over the course of his career as a coach, Carroll and the Seahawks have been doubted numerous amount of times. Though, the Seahawks coach has proved those doubts wrong. The Seahawks are coming off of a good NFL Draft Class. Though, they didn’t get a quarterback they picked up Devon Witherspoon and Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Caroll helped with that process.
The 71-year-old has the fourth most active wins (161) in the NFL for coaches. Trailing just Andy Reid, Bill Belichick and Mike Tomlin. Those three are on the list as 1, 2 and 3 respectively. A super bowl ring isn’t holding Carroll down either, he has that. One of those is more than a few of the coaches on the list can say.
If you want to count college championships, he was a two-time National Champion there. Pete Caroll being left off the list is just insanity. He deserves to be there and definitely higher than 10.
