After being on a bit of a slide these last few games, Purdue had a chance to get right against Ohio State. In front of a sellout Mackey Arena crowd, Purdue would go on to win 82-55 in a beatdown of Ohio State.
1st Half
With four freshmen starting for Ohio State and Zed Key out, they had a tough road to climb if they wanted to win. It was back and forth for the Buckeyes and Boilermakers. Purdue would lead 12-10 with some early threes falling for them. Braden Smith would pick up two early fouls, but Ohio State continued to hang in. The score was 20-16 Purdue with 10:29 left. The next three minutes would be all Purdue. With Zach Edey on the bench, Purdue would balloon its lead to 26-18 with a little over seven minutes left in the half. With three minutes left in the half, the Boilermakers lead 34-25. Edey had 13 points along with two rebounds and three blocks. Ohio State was having a lot of foul trouble with Brice Sensabaugh having three, Owen Spencer having four, and Felix Okpara and Isaac Likekele had two fouls for the Buckeyes.
The half would finish with an Edey put back
Purdue would be leading 38-29 at half. Edey led the way at half with 16 points, six rebounds and three blocks for Purdue, while Brice Sensabaugh for Ohio State had nine points. Ohio State’s issue was its depth down low. Foul trouble and injuries led to Zach Edey eating down low in the first half. Purdue did a lot better with the press this half, while also rebounding way better than they have the last few games. Purdue has lost its last two games after leading at half, so the Boilers will need a big half to close it out.
2nd Half
Second half action would begin with an Ethan Morton three pointer for the Boilers. With 14:40 in the half, Edey had yet another double double, tying the NCAA leader with 21 double doubles on the season. The Boilers were 49-35 and starting to take control. 53-38 was the score with 12:20 left, and Ohio State’s young lineup along with a thin bench began to show. With 10 minutes to go, Edey scored 26 of Purdue’s 59 as they led 59-38. 69-45 would be the score with a little over four minutes left. This pass from Braden Smith was sweet.
The game would finish with Purdue winning 82-55. This was a much needed bounce back game for the Boilers. After losing their last two games, this was a good spot to win big. Edey would finish with 26 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks. He overwhelmed and destroyed a very thin Buckeyes front court.
Purdue looks to continue this momentum next Saturday, where they host the Indiana Hoosiers.
