The Las Vegas Raiders have had a very underwhelming season. They have a record of 2-6, almost as many losses as last year when they were 10-7, and the season is not even halfway over yet. Las Vegas knows their season is effectively over, they have decisions to make in the offseason. This includes whether or not they should bring back quarterback Derek Carr. The Raiders should move on from him this offseason.
Why Move On From Carr Now?
It has been reported for years the Raiders were willing to move on from Carr. The team has just been good enough that they are not in the position to draft a future starting quarterback to replace Carr. Carr has been good enough to make sure he has not been a player who needs to be replaced. It looks like the Raiders will be in the position to take a quarterback of the future because of how poorly their season is going.
The future is important for the team. Carr has a career record of 59-76 as a starting quarterback. The team simply cannot figure out how to win with him. For a team to truly be a contender with Carr, everything else has to be near-perfect for him to succeed. Although Carr is a good quarterback, the Raiders’ constant imperfections do not help him. Therefore, if the Las Vegas Raiders move Carr in the offseason, it may benefit both sides. Carr will also still have value in a trade because he has the consistency of being a good quarterback, a team that is desperate may make a move. Although the Raiders signed Carr to an extension in the offseason, his dead money is only 5 million dollars so the contract is movable. His no-trade clause may become a problem, but the team can cut him. If Carr wants to keep his contract, he can waive his no-trade clause.
Raiders: Carr Has Regressed This Year
The Raiders are facing a lot of problems this year. Carr is not the only problem, he is a part of the teams’ struggles. He is having his worst statistical season since 2017. He has a tendency to check it down when the team has a lead instead of staying aggressive, which has played a factor in the three-blown 17-point leads this year. A decent amount of the sacks have been his fault because he has a tendency to stand in the pocket all day and not realize it is collapsing. Carr is missing targets wide open to throw into coverage. He is also throwing inaccurately this year. Carr’s completion percentage is his worst in seven years. Las Vegas should move on from him while his value is still there and can be in a position to draft a replacement this year.
