The Kansas City Chiefs conquered the Cincinnati Bengals in a 23-20 thrilling victory to win the AFC Championship and advance to the Super Bowl.
No Run Game, No Problem For Kansas City
After relying on the run game in the Divisional Round, the Chiefs kept the ball in the air as quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw 326 yards and two touchdowns on 43 attempts. Throughout the week, there was speculation on how Mahomes will play with an injured ankle, but he played like his usual self, carrying the offense to victory. Even with an injured wide receiver core offseason addition, Marquez Valdes-Scantling stepped up with six receptions for 116 yards and a touchdown. The MVP favorite will again have to show out as he’ll face a tough challenge against the Philadelphia Eagles defense.
Mistakes Cost the Bengals
In a close game, the small things add up, and it ends up being the difference for Cincinnati. Quarterback Joe Burrow threw two interceptions and was sacked five times as Burrow was struggling to find time in the pocket. Alongside losing the turnover battle, the Bengals were penalized more, earning nine penalties for 71 yards, with the dagger coming on the Chiefs game-winning drive to set up a field goal. Bengals head coach Zac Taylor had some questionable clock management to end the game, as time was saved to allow Kansas City to win.
Chris Jones Gets His Revenge
After all offseason, Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones waited for his moment as he missed on potential game-ending sacks in last season’s AFC Championship against the Bengals. This time Jones made his mark this year as he sacked Burrow twice and recorded his first postseason sack. Jones’ second sack iced the Bengals potential game-winning drive and forced Cincinnati to punt. Jones will again look to make his mark as he’ll match up against the best offensive line in the league in the Super Bowl.
