Former first-round pick Rashaad Penny and the Eagles have agreed to a one-year contract, per NFL insider Ian Rapoport.
The terms of the agreement have yet to be released.
The Seattle Seahawks selected Penny with the 28th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Since then, Penny has struggled to stay on the field, playing in only 42 of 82 possible games. Moreover, while he has dealt with minor injuries, Penny has also had some major ones. He tore his ACL in 2019 and broke his fibula last season after just five games played. This sidelined Penny for the remainder of the season.
Though, when on the field, Penny has been one of the league’s more efficient runners. In his last 10 games played, Penny accumulated 1,017 yards, eight touchdowns and a 6.8 yards per carry on 149 attempts.
The terms not being released yet could hint at it being a team-friendly deal. Nonetheless, it’s a bargain deal for Howie Roseman and the Eagles. Penny, 27 years old, could excel behind one of the best — if not the best — offensive lines in football.
Correspondingly, it appears this move closes the door on a Miles Sanders reunion. After the Penny news broke, Sanders took to twitter to thank the city for the past four years.
Sanders, 25 years old, was drafted in the second round of the 2019 draft. He spent the past four seasons as Philadelphia’s top runner, amassing a total of 3,708 rushing yards and 20 touchdowns during his tenure with the Eagles. This past season was his best year with the team, as he eclipsed the 1,000 yard mark for the first time in his career.
Sanders remains a top running back on the market and should receive top dollar. Roseman has never been known to spend a ton of capital on the position, so it was assumed Sanders would playing football elsewhere unless he was franchise tagged.
Furthermore, this is the fifth player the Eagles have lost due to free agency, those being: Javon Hargrave, T.J. Edwards, Kyzir White, Marcus Epps and now Sanders. The reigning NFC champs are going to look a whole lot different next season.
