Manchester United and Liverpool renew their rivalry in the blockbuster fixture of the Premier League’s Super Sunday. United travel to Anfield on flying form having won four matches on the bounce. In addittion to their great team, United also have one of the most inform players in world football, Marcus Rashford at their disposal. Liverpool seem to be finding some form domestically as well. They’ve kept six clean sheets in a row and are slowly climbing up the table. This is arguably the biggest rivalry in English football and it’ll be a game played with emotion but quality at the same time.
Liverpool
“It will be a tough game but it’s one I’m looking forward to and it will be a good test,” said Liverpool right back Trent Alexander-Arnold in his recent interview with Sky Sports. There will be key duels all over the pitch. Salah vs Shaw, Varane and Martinez vs Nunez and Jota and Bruno vs Fabinho. However, Rashford vs Trent is the most intriguing duel for various reasons. Will Trent depart his defensive duties as often as he usually does or will Rashford limit his offensive prowess?

Similarly, will Rashford leave Trent unmarked when he does choose to attack or will he be forced to track back? The frequency of whatever occurs always comes down to the manager but sometimes in game situations forces players to make decisions based on instinct and experience. This is certainly a duel to keep an eye on as the match progresses.
As all great sides are, Liverpool are not just reliant on one player. They have multiple weapons that can cause damage on Sunday. Nunez has recovered from his injury and is looking sharp while Salah’s output is gradually improving. Konate and Van Dijk are back and the Reds look more solid at the back. Whether that’s down to Klopp improving the defensive structure or simply the difference in quality that Gomez and Matip possesses compared to Konate and Van Dijk. Regardless of which is true, the fact is; Liverpool have improved defensively.
Anfield will be up for it as it usually is whenever United come to town. Let’s see if the players match their passion and bring the quality as well. Particularly when they have to do more defensive work.
Man U
Nothing seems to phase Manchester United anymore. They go behind in games and respond emphatically. They also know how to stay in the game whenever they’re under immense pressure from the opposition. Erik ten Hag’s men now sit in third place on 49 points. Four points clear of Spurs who are fourth and eight above Newcastle in fifth. United are unquestionably favorites for that third spot and a win here can cement a top three finish.
Ten Hag has changed the mentality around the club. The players now believe in their ability both as individuals and as a team. Players like Fred and Wan Bissaka who many deemed as flops are now some of the best performing squad players in the league. The fans now believe in their team and Old Trafford is a fortress again.
This isn’t the style of football that the former Ajax boss wants to play. With time and more signings, his philosophy will become clearer and more present. One thing that can be seen in these performances is his adaptability. He wants possession of the ball but is happy to sit deep if the game requires it. This is the sign of a great manager.
The Red Devils will need to be prepared to suffer on Sunday as Liverpool will have spells of dominance throughout the game.
