Patriots hire Jerod Mayo

A lot has happened on the coaching front since the conclusion of the 2023 NFL regular season. In this article, I will dive into all of the head coaches hired following the 2023 NFL regular season and build a case for every fan of these teams out there. Hopefully, it’ll get you pumped up for the upcoming 2024 NFL draft and the next season.

New England Patriots go with former team legend Jerod Mayo for head coaching position

Former New England Patriots Linebacker Jerod Mayo is the pick to take over as the new head coach for Bill Belichick after a tumultuous 2023 Patriots’ season. Didn’t seem to be a huge surprise to peeps in the NFL business. He’s the Legend pick and more importantly a youthful boost to this seemingly aging team over the last couple of years. Mayo entered the NFL via the 2008 draft, picked by the New England Patriots. He went on to play for the Patriots for eight seasons and quickly after retiring, started his coaching career with the Pats as an Inside Linebackers coach in 2019.

Let’s take a look at some case-strengthening points of the Mayo campaign. Mayo helped coach a 2023 New England Patriots to 15th in points against, 3.3 yards per attempt rushing allowed and allowed only 6 100-yard rushing games. The linebackers also helped boast a 6th-ranked 3rd-down defense and his LB unit led the team in tackles this past season. He’s shown he can get close to the best out of his unit. Let’s see if that transitions to running a whole NFL team as a unit. I believe he has what it takes to make ole Billy B proud.

Antonio Pierce wins the job in Las Vegas with impressive late season run, led by a stout defense

Las Vegas Raiders go with the man who led them to a 5-4 finish in the 2023 NFL season as the interim head coach as their new head coach, Antonio Pierce. Pierce helped the Raiders climb up to 2nd in the AFC West and had a shot at the playoffs in the waning weeks of this season. Pierce has been the Linebacker coach for the Raiders the last two seasons. He became the Interim Head Coach after Josh McDaniels was fired earlier this season after a 3-5 start.

The 2023 Raiders finished 23rd for points for and 9th in points against and with that defensive roster, that’s impressive. That unit only allowed 30 points and over 3 times, considering their defensive talent, the schedule, and the fact they played 17 games this season, you can’t help but be blown away by the job Pierce did for the Raiders finishing up the season. The Las Vegas Raiders seem to have gotten a guy to get the most out of his players, should be a threat in that division for years to come.

Tennessee Titans goes with offensive guru in Brian Callahan to help develop young QB Will Levis

The Tennessee Titans decided to back 2023 QB Will Levis and get an offensive head coach to help develop him in Brian Callahan. Callahan has coached a whopping 14 years in the NFL and boasts a solid 121-104-1 record, with a stellar 11-7 record in the playoffs. Callahan has been the offensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals for the last 5 seasons.

Brian Callahan coached them to a 16th-ranked offense in 2023, a 7th in 2022, and a 7th in 2021, and half of the 2023 season was with Jake Browning at quarterback. That former production bodes well for Will Levis and this Tennessee Titans offense that was an eyesore often this season.

It is a flipped switch from the Mike Vrabel hire before him, but Callahan is the right call for this new Titans team. This Titans team is trying to build through the draft and build a team behind their young, encouraging QB. Callahan was also a part of the coaching staff for one championship team and three conference championship teams. Dude has been an integral part of a lot of winning teams in the past.

Legendary Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh heads back to the NFL to coach the LA Chargers

Jim Harbaugh, brother of Baltimore Ravens John Harbaugh, accepted the Los Angeles Chargers position of head coach. Following a National Championship run with the Wolverines Harbaugh looks to be one of the most successful new head coaches at the NFL level in 2024. He coached 13 seasons in college football. He won a lot of football games and boasts a stellar record of 118-46. He was named AP Coach of the Year in 2021 and was the 2022 Big Ten Coach of the Year.

Jim Harbaugh led the Michigan Wolverines to the National title this past college football season, so he finally added title-winning coach to the old resume. Harbaugh also went 4-7 in bowls and 3-5 against an often more talented Ohio State team in his time as a college football coach. Harbaugh has clearly shown he can mold young minds and coach them up to win a lot of football games.

The Los Angeles Chargers seem to be a great team to make that jump with. They have the franchise QB in Justin Herbert and they are still packed with loads of talent. Let’s see what Jim Harbaugh can do, we already know great coaching in the NFL runs in the family.

Atlanta Falcons give Raheem Morris another shot to prove himself as a head coach in this league

The Atlanta Falcons put a dot on 2023 and moved on to the new year by deciding to go with a true NFL coaching veteran as their new head coach, Raheem Morris. Morris has coached 22 years and he doesn’t exactly have a glamorous record, 171-184. However, Morris does have a winning playoff record at 10-7, so he has shown he can win the important ones. Morris just has to do better about getting to them. Morris was the defensive coordinator for the last two seasons for the LA Rams and he coached a Super Bowl-winning defense the first season there.

Raheem Morris’ first head coaching stint with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers didn’t go so well with a 17-31 record, but at least he does have experience. He also could use this new opportunity to show us he has learned from his past mistakes. Morris can say he has been a part of some championship-winning teams, the 2002 Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the 2021 LA Rams.

His previous conference championship-winning seasons in 2002, 2016, and 2021 show he can help the Falcons win that often weaker division, the NFC South. One of those conference championships was with a previous Atlanta Falcons team. This is Morris’ second time working for the Atlanta Falcons. He previously worked there from 2015 to 2020.

The Falcons opted for Morris as their new coach over one of the most experienced head coaches in the NFL carousel, Bill Belichick.

Carolina Panthers select Dave Canales to be the head coach to lead the rebuild around Bryce Young

The Carolina Panthers decided to go with a potential NFL QB guru as their new head coach after a truly rough 2023 Panthers campaign, Dave Canales. Canales signs on to coach a team that is believed to be at rock bottom. They do however have the QB to build around in Bryce Young. Young took his lumps this past season, but he did show promise when he got any sort of protection. Canales boasts a rather impressive resume with some QBs who would be thought of as less talented as Bryce Young. With this new gig, Canales should be able to turn his career around and the Carolina Panthers.

Let’s dive into that resume for Dave Canales. Canales has a chance to be one of the most successful new head coaches heading into the 2024 NFL season. He’s also been a part of an NFL staff for 11 playoff wins. He coached Baker Mayfield and Geno Smith to top NFL offenses. The Baker one was only 20th in offense, but the Geno-led offense was 9th!

This past season, he helped coach the Tampa Bay Buccaneers offense to 10th in 3rd down offense and 2nd in 4th down offense. Stellar numbers for offenses led by Baker Mayfield and Geno Smith. Panther’s fans should be pumped to have such an offensive mind with their young QB, who was just a Heisman trophy winner at Alabama not that long ago. The future looking at least a little brighter in Carolina.

TL//DR: There are six new NFL head coaches.
