The trade deadline is approaching quickly in this MLB season. The Red Sox are currently sitting at 48-43 on the season, sitting five games above .500. While they are last in their division, it’s not saying much given the powerhouse of the AL East this season. They are also two games out of a wildcard spot, so playoff dreams are still alive, as well. The question remains though, should the Red Sox buy or sell come the deadline on August 1st.

Should the Red Sox Buy or Sell by August 1st?
The idea going into 2023 was that this season was a bridge year for the Red Sox. Although the Sox lost some key members from last year like Nathan Eovaldi and Xander Bogaerts, the team is playing much better than last season. Some people might even say they are over-performing given the projections going into the season.
The offseason acquisitions of some veteran names like Kenley Jansen and Justin Turner have brought a level-headed feel to the clubhouse. And while not signed this past winter, the addition of James Paxton from the IL has been one of the best surprises of the season. However, should the Red Sox keep these names and trade for more key guys for a playoff run? Or should they trade these newly acquired and short-signed players for some long term prospects?
The Red Sox certainly have the trade pieces to put together some solid returns. But Red Sox chief baseball officer, Chaim Bloom, most likely values the farm system and its potential to become key players at the big league level soon. It’s unsure which direction the Sox will decide to go in at the deadline. This season certainly isn’t over and October is still on the board.
