Report: Cody Rhodes Won’t ‘Finish The Story’ At Wrestlemania 40

Cody Rhodes Story

One of the biggest storylines in the WWE since the return of Cody Rhodes has been him finishing the story. This year that storyline has been elevated with the return of CM Punk. The two are the most favored candidates to win the 2024 Royal Rumble on Saturday. According to a report, it appears Rhodes might not win. In fact, according to the report, he won’t finish the story at Wrestlemania 40.

If Rhodes doesn’t headline a match on the grandest stage of them all. That would leave speculation for Roman vs. Rock at Wrestlemania. There has been some speculation since ‘The Rock’ returned whether or not, The American Nightmare are Cody Rhodes would finish his story. Despite that speculation, he has been unfazed, making it clear that he will finish the story at Wrestlemania 40.

With the recent news about Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson joining the Board of Directors for TKO, the parent company of UFC-WWE, it’s opened a more prevalent window for his return at Mania. The possibility that we would get the match between Rock and Reigns was already there. A win over ‘The Rock’ could cement the legacy for Reigns as the greatest champion of all time.

There’s also the potential that we don’t get CM Punk vs Seth Rollins at Mania. Especially, after this last week’s episode of Monday Night Raw. The groundwork for two new feuds was laid out. The first was between Intercontinental Champion Gunther and the World Heavyweight Champion and the other for a potential rivalry between Rhodes and Punk.

A feud with his former mentor could be viewed as one of the last chapters written before Rhodes finishes the story. Much like Rhodes and Reigns, as well as Rollins and Punk, Rhodes vs Punk would provide the WWE with a marquee matchup. Both superstars are heading into the Royal Rumble red hot. The possibility exists that this match could be even more compelling than the main event, and defeating Punk would be a massive victory for Rhodes. The same could be said for Punk if he defeats Rhodes.

If the card at Mania includes Rhodes vs. Punk, Rollins vs. Gunther and Reigns vs. Rock, this would leave the WWE in a difficult spot. What do you then do with the Damian Priest, who holds the Money in the Bank contract? Well, he could either continue the feud with Drew McIntyre or start a new feud with a high-profile opponent such as Randy Orton, AJ Styles or LA Knight. Depending on the direction of the Judgement Day, you could also have Finn vs Priest, if the group splits up.

This report makes absolutely zero sense. Why would “sources close to Triple H” reveal that Cody Rhodes won’t finish the story right after he was named the cover athlete for WWE 2K24? The WWE should continue with the main matches that have been reported for Wrestlemania: Cody vs. Roman and Punk vs. Rollins. Either way, We could be in for the biggest and greatest Wrestlemania of all time. Is the WWE making the wise choice by not having Rhodes ‘finish the story’ yet? Let us know in the comments.
