TKO Group Holdings, the company that merged the WWE with UFC, announced Tuesday that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has joined the board of directors. Johnson also gained full ownership of his ring name.

Johnson is one of the most successful professional wrestlers of all-time, winning eight world championships, winning the 2000 Royal Rumble, and appearing in five WrestleMania main events.

And outside of the ring, Johnson has found just as much success.

As an actor, he’s been the lead man in a multitude of blockbuster films for over a decade. From G.I. Joe to Fast & Furious to Black Adam and even to Disney to play Maui in Moana, Johnson has been one of the most successful actors in Hollywood with films grossing over $10.5 billion worldwide.

As a producer, he has two hit shows under his belt. HBO’s Ballers lasted five seasons and his autobiographical sitcom Young Rock lasted three seasons on NBC.

As a businessman, he’s the co-owner of the United Football League, the new merger of the XFL and USFL. He’s the founder of Teremana Tequila. And joining the TKO Board of Directors is his latest business venture.

Knowing The Rock’s role

Founder of WWE and Executive Chairman of TKO’s board Vince McMahon said, “Very few people on the planet understand the convergence of sports, entertainment, media, and business like Rock. We are proud to have him join the TKO board to help take our company to new heights.”

He’s a third-generation wrestler, the son of Rocky “Soulman” Johnson and grandson of High Chief Peter Maivia. He’s part of the historic Anoa’i family, alongside current Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns, who he recently alluded to on the Day 1 Edition of Monday Night Raw.

Turns out he’s now seated at the head of a different table.

“I’m very humbled to have a seat at the table that has decades of history and family legacy for me. A table that my family helped to build. Being on the TKO Board of Directors, and taking full ownership of my name, ‘The Rock’, is not only unprecedented, but incredibly inspiring as my crazy life is coming full circle,” Johnson said.

Only time will tell what’s next for The Rock in the ring. And there’s a lot of speculation for a potential dream match between The Rock and Roman Reigns. But joining the executive team for TKO certainly generates excitement for the future of the WWE.
