Rico Flores Jr.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish have already had three receivers enter the transfer portal. Another can be added to that list after Rico Flores Jr. has announced his intention to enter the portal.

“I want to take this time to thank the University of Notre Dame. Thank you to my family, Coach Stuckey, Coach Freeman, the staff, support staff, media staff, the community, and everyone who helped me along this journey. Thank you for taking a. chance on a kid from Sacramento, California, who had a dream to make it out.”

“After prayer, careful consideration, and many conversations I have decided to enter the NCAA transfer portal to find a new home. Once again, thank you to the University of Notre Dame, fans, and community. I look forward to my next opportunity.”

Rico Flores Jr had become a key contributor for the Fighting Irish, making his presence felt from day one. He became part of the receiver rotation in the first game against Navy. By week four, he had become a key contributor. His best game came in a 45-7 victory over Wake Forest, when he hauled in eight catches for 102 yards.

Flores caught at least one pass in each of the last nine games of the regular season. He finished his freshman season with 27 catches and 392 yards. He scored his only touchdown in the Irish loss to Ohio State.

There’s been a number of receivers who have already entered the transfer portal. Oregon may be a team that could stand out for any receiver. They have had success not only with transfer QBs but with receivers as well. Their leading receiver, Troy Franklin is likely headed to the NFL.

Notre Dame has a learning curve ahead but part of the problem could be that they are an independent team. Granted that allows them scheduling flexibility but there might be more roster turnover from year to year. Notre Dame has many receivers coming in with their 2023 recruiting class, that’s likely why they’ve seen four current receivers transfer.
