When Russell Westbrook was traded at NBA Trade Deadline, rumors were swirling that the Jazz would look to reach a contract buyout with the veteran guard. Now, it appears both sides have reached a deal and Westbrook plans on returning to Los Angeles when all is said and done. Though, this time, he’ll be suiting up in Red and White rather than Yellow and Purple.
As soon as the three-team trade was finalized, Westbrook was linked to multiple teams. Including, the team that he plans on signing with… the Los Angeles Clippers. After the Clippers traded away veteran guard John Wall and Reggie Jackson, the push for Russell Westbrook seemed imminent. The move creates depth at the point beyond Terance Mann and Bones Hyland.
For Westbrook, the move back to Los Angeles is better than remaining in Utah for the team’s rebuild. Additionally, he will not have to be consistently reminded of his experience with racially offensive trash talk from a Jazz fan in 2019.
Now, the nine-time All-Star can channel any potential frustrations from his time as a Laker into the crosstown rivalry. The motivating material is definitely there. At 34 years old, Westbrook had his moments from the Lakers bench, averaging 16.2 points, 7.7 assists and 6.1 rebounds per game. His shooting splits of 42.4/30.8/64.9 leave plenty of room for improvement, but he can still contribute offensively.
The move for Westbrook reunites him with Paul George, creating a big three with those two and Kawhi Leonard. Whether or not the chemistry and fit are there for the Clippers with the addition is still to be determined. Though, Westbrook can at least provide some depth if not a starter.
