The Denver Broncos embarrassed Russell Wilson and his career, but no one wants to admit it. Everyone thought that the Broncos were saved by Wilson when they signed him back in 2022, but boy did that take a turn for the worse. Wilson’s entire career in Denver was filled with name blames and finger pointing directed at him, and you know what he did about it? He took it like a true leader. Russell Wilson was not the problem in a Broncos uniform.
Let’s start from the beginning when the Seattle Seahawks sent over Wilson to Denver in a blockbuster trade as he had just come off yet another magnificent season throwing for over 3,000 yards and 25 touchdowns. Bronco’s fans were pumped to see Wilson team up with Sean Peyton and get back to the old Denver ways, but was it really this promising from day one? Peyton was coming to Denver after leaving a legacy in New Orleans where he worked with Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees from the very beginning. Peyton and Wilson were coming from two very different systems and football fans expected it to just click.
After a rough first year together everyone started blaming Wilson saying it was time to hang ’em up and that his career was over when in reality he threw for over 3,500 yards and 15 touchdowns. Although these were career lows for Wilson it was his first time in his career where we steered away from using his legs as much in attempt to cater to Sean Peyton’s play style. This is when the outside noise started to effect their relationship and with reports stating their relationship was in shambles on and off the field Wilson was always the one getting the blame.
Moving into the second year there was a lot of expectation for Wilson to lead the Bronco’s to a much better season and to be honest he did just that throwing for over 3,000 yards and 26 touchdowns. His stats looked very identical to his time in Seattle. He did all this without a play action to work off of and a terrible offensive line. He was struggling for his life out there.
The biggest take away from their season was the fact that the plays that were being called for Wilson were simply terrible. He was making something out of nothing half of the time and yet they expected more of him. There was nothing more he could’ve done especially when news started to break about toxicity behind the scenes.
In an interview on I AM ATHLETE podcast Wilson describes the behind the scenes contract clauses that the public had never seen, and through all of this Wilson never complained or made the Broncos look bad. He just put his head down and continued to try and win football games.
Russell Wilson was not the problem.
As we recently saw Wilson sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers lets watch and see how he gets back to his old ways and helps them prosper under head coach Mike Tomlin.
