After shocking the world by announcing his retirement. Earlier this month, it was announced that Nick Saban would be joining the ESPN College GameDay lineup. Rece Davis believes that Saban will fit right in.
On the Feb. 9 episode of the Tailgate Discussions podcast, which you can watch above, Spencer McLaughlin joined the show to talk about that and more College Football news.
“I love it. I think that Saban is a thoughtful guy,” McLaughlin stated. “He’s good on camera, he’s coached through many different eras… The stories and insight he has, the way he talks about the sport. I want voices like that amplified, not minimized.”
It appears that current College GameDay analyst Rece Davis agrees with that statement and with Alex Twist and myself that Saban is a great addition.
“Nick has already shown a remarkable ability to slide into that seat and provide expert analysis,” Davis said on the College GameDay Podcast. “He handles the tapes well. He understands how to speak in headlines because he is a gifted public speaker. Not just to his team. If you’ve heard him in any other format, it’s really quite an impressive thing. I don’t have any doubt at all he will thrive in this role and I’m looking forward to the new dynamic.”
During the show, Pete Thamel also stated that he was excited for Saban’s addition. The way that Saban carries himself may inspire the crew to be more serious at times.
“I do think we’re all going to have our spine a little straighter with Nick Saban around the meeting room and on our Monday Zooms,” said Thamel. “What a cool opportunity for us to be around a football mind like that and to be able to talk about the game. I’ve already heard he’s 100 miles per hour into Draft prep.”
The first appearance that we will see from Nick Saban on ESPN platforms will be at the NFL Draft, April 25–27 in Detroit. We are excited about Saban joining the media industry and it appears Rece Davis is as well. The doubt about Saban as an analyst is unwarranted, he’s going to be successful.
