Sabrina Ionescu is one of, if not the best player through to come through college in recent years. Though, in her first two years in the WNBA she has not shown the true potential that we all saw in college. She has shown flashes from time to time. Now granted, in her first season she did suffer a season ending injury. Though this year, if she can stay healthy Sabrina should be a force to be reckoned with in the WNBA.
New Coach?
The New York Liberty have just brought in Sandy Brondello to be the new coach of the team. Sandy made two WNBA finals appearances with a championship in eight years for the Phoenix Mercury. Brondello joins a roster filled with championship level talent, while the franchise is still looking for its first championship.
What do we know?
We know that Sabrina Ionescu averaged 11.7 points with six assists and six rebounds as a sophomore guard coming off her injury. Though she only shot 37.9% from the field and 32.5% from three. Ionescu struggled from the field in her first season at the University of Oregon shooting under 40% from the field, and the next season she made a significant jump shooting above 45% from the field.
Why is she due?
Coming into the 2020 WNBA Draft, it was looking like Sabrina would be the future of the New York Liberty. She still has the potential to lead a team to a championship but needs some help and a little mor mentoring from someone who has been at the top which is why the hire of Sandy Brondello is great for the Liberty.
Last season, she recorded her first triple double for the Liberty, becoming the youngest in WNBA history to do so. But it’s not a rare occurence as she had 26 of them for the University of Oregon. Though last season it appeared that she was finding her way. Her stats and how she’s rebounded from struggles in the past all point to her breaking out this next season.
