The Alamo City’s NBA team is gearing up for the next 2022-2023 campaign, as the season starts tomorrow, 10/18/2022. The Spurs’ season debut will be on 10/19/2022, a day after the rest of the league kicks off its opening day festivities. With all this being said, let us take a look at the San Antonio Spurs season preview below.

In what was either the most humbling statement of expectations or a well disguised tactic, Head Coach Gregg Popovich had some choice words to say about the upcoming season:

Spurs’ Season Expectation

Suffice it to say, even the future hall of fame head coach doesn’t want fans’ nor critics’ hopes to get up. In one sense, at least he is being real. On the other hand, if you are a Spurs fan, then buckle up for a bumpy season. The days of the big three: Tony Parker, Manu Ginóbili, and Tim Duncan are long and gone, but the franchise is still struggling to recover. Perhaps the fall is always hardest from the top, yet it seems that other organizations have had better recoveries. For example, the Cleveland Cavaliers are back in contention after parting with superstars Lebron James and Kyrie Irving.

So, it is certainly frustrating for fans of the team to witness the lack of grace in the post championship era of the team. Additionally, the sour taste of the Kawhi Leonard fiasco will always linger as long as Leonard and Popovich inhabit the same ecosystem. Additionally, the mishandling of Demar Derozan and Dejounte Murray still stings. Both players were cornerstone players for the Spurs, yet find themselves on different teams this season. The Spurs’ inability to retain talent, especially homegrown(Murray) is increasingly frustrating for fans.

Spurs Starting Lineup

The Spurs’ roster is by no means a safe place for any current player. While the team is not usually one to engage in the trade deadline, it’s hard to imagine they’ll keep this current lineup. Spearheaded by PF Keldon Johnson, the other starting four are: Center- Jakob Poeltl, SF- Jeremy Sochan, SG- Devin Vassell, PG- Tre Jones.

Spurs’ Season Preview Conclusion

In summation, this is not the Spurs of yesteryear. Nor, should they be judged as such. Their inability to retain talent and get back on their feet since losing key players will withhold them from Western Conference playoff contention. Additionally, their head coach is keeping the expectations real with the media. While fans might not want to hear it, they will be hard-pressed to watch it, as this season does not look promising for the young team.

In conclusion, they finished last year as the tenth seed in the West, with a 33-39 record. After literal decades of playoff appearances, and a winning record, it is hard to imagine they can escape with one again after this year. If you are a fan of theirs, good luck and buckle up, as this will be a rough season to swallow. Lastly, it appears it will be bittersweet to watch, as Popovich is certainly in his twilight years with the organization.
