According to Jeff Passan Robbie Ray is headed to Seattle;
The contract is five-year deal worth $115 million and has an opt-out after the third season.
Recently being named the American League Cy Young Award Winner, the Left-handed Robbie Ray is one of the best Free Agent Starters available. Ray beat out the New York Yankees Gerritt Cole and the Chicago White Sox Lance Lynn.
Though he did not make the All-Star team, the 29-year-old finished the season with a 2.84 ERA with 248 strikeouts in 193.1 innings. His 6.62 overall ERA in 2020 is the highest ever by a pitcher in a season prior to winning a Cy Young award, according to Elias Sports Bureau.
“I’m enjoying free agency,” he said while accepting his award via video call with MLB Network. “The process is a lot of fun.” Adding that Toronto is “still in the conversation.”
“Obviously, I love Toronto, but we’ll see where things go,” he said.
Robbie Ray was not expected to agree to a deal before the lockout. But with the Mariners making a strong push for the a top-of-the-rotation guy late last night and into the morning, they landed one of the biggest Aces on the market.
The Seattle Mariners are adding the Cy Young winner to a rotation that also includes Logan Gilbert, Marco Gonzales, and Chris Flexen.
Robbie Ray is on his way to Seattle to take his physical and sign the contract. If the physical passes, this will become the largest FA signing that Jerry Dipoto has made as the GM of the Mariners.
According to Jon Heyman, the Mariners are also looking at Javier Baez, Kris Bryant and others.
This is breaking news.
More to come.
