Russell Wilson Seattle

The biggest news coming out of the NFL this week was the benching of the former Seahawks quarterback. That sequentially will signal the end of a two-year run in Denver after the Seahawks traded him. In those two years, the Hawks have struggled to find a QB for the long term. Last season, Geno Smith performed well in the replacement of Wilson but that success hasn’t been sustainable after he was rewarded with a payday. The Seattle Seahawks need to find a new quarterback, but Russell Wilson is not the solution.

According to reports, the former Seahawk will be released at the end of the season. This will mark the first time he’ll be a free agent since he was drafted by the Hawks in 2012. I’ll give him this, Russell Wilson is the only starting QB that won a Super Bowl in Seattle. Over the past couple of days, the question “Would Seahawks fans welcome back Wilson” has been lobbied.

If it were up to me, I’d say no way. Not only is there too much history between the two sides, but the Seahawks are at a point where they need to get younger, not older. Bringing in Wilson to resume his starting role, while it may help win a few more games in the interim, it doesn’t set Seattle up for success long after Wilson and even Pete Carroll retire.

That illustrious breakup between Seattle and Wilson could have been imagined several seasons before it happened. While Wilson may be the best QB in Seattle history, the Hawks would be better off drafting a quarterback this season. They likely won’t get one of the bigger names like Caleb Williams, Drake Maye or Jayden Daniels but they could land one of Bo Nix or Michael Penix.

Bringing Wilson back would be a backward step. It’s time to move forward whether the fans want to or not.
