With the Denver Broncos benching Russell Wilson earlier this week, many teams could be considered a destination. He’ll certainly be riding his way out of Broncos Country.
Just two seasons ago, the Broncos acquired Russell Wilson in exchange for TE Noah Fant, QB Drew Lock, DE Shelby Harris (no longer with the Hawks), OT Charles Cross, OLB Boye Mafe, OLB Tyreke Smith, WR Dareke Young, CB Devon Witherspoon and OLB Derick Hall. With the last six players all coming via draft picks.
With reports coming out that the Broncos would cut Wilson at the end of the season, let’s take a look at which teams could be a destination for Russell Wilson.
Minnesota Vikings (5/1 Odds)
The Vikings are the favorite destination for Russell Wilson. After failing to agree to an extension with Cousins, the Vikings will be without a QB next season. Although there may still be some interest from both sides, the Vikings can’t tag Cousins. I’m also not sure that they would want to at this point either because of his age and the fact that he’s coming off an Achilles injury. I would be surprised if the Vikings didn’t attempt to bring in Wilson. They have an offense that he would succeed in with elite receivers. They’re also not in the position to take one of the top QBs this season in the draft.
New England Patriots
Signing a QB like Russell Wilson would give Bill Belichick another top-tier quarterback to work with. However, it’s not guaranteed that Belichick will be in New England next season. It’s no secret that the Patriots have struggled to find a replacement for Tom Brady after he left for Tampa Bay. There were hopes that Mac Jones could take over, but he recently lost the starting job to Bailey Zappe. Wilson would stabilize the Patriots QB room. Owner Robert Kraft has expressed his desire to win, unlike a rookie QB this next season. Wilson would provide a winning mentality. It’s also unlikely that the Patriots tear it down, no matter who their coach is next season.
Washington Commanders (7/1 Odds)
Whether or not Ron Rivera is in the picture next year, the Commanders have not had a stable QB since Kirk Cousins left in 2018. Sam Howell has certainly shown flashes in Bienemy’s offensive scheme but has not materialized as a long-term option. Adding a QB like Wilson would give the team a franchise cornerstone. The team seems poised for a major rebuild under new owner Josh Harris and signing Wilson could spark that. However, the Commanders may be more likely to take a QB in this year’s draft. They have a chance to land one of the two prize QBs this season: Drake Maye or Caleb Williams. I wouldn’t leave the Commanders out of the choosing though, they may be a dark horse.
Las Vegas Raiders (7/1 Odds)
The Raiders are another likely destination for Wilson. While Aidan O’Connell has shown flashes down the stretch, there’s only so far that he can take the Raiders. Antonio Pierce is likely given a shot to be the full-time head coach, he’s earned it. His first task will be finding a quarterback who can get the Raiders back to the playoffs. They could trade up to get Maye, Williams or even Jayden Daniels. However, that won’t come cheap. Throwing some money toward Russ would be more likely and cheaper long term. Wilson is familiar with having a strong running back presence from his time in Seattle. With the Raiders, he would have that again with Josh Jacobs. He would also have a talented wide receiver corps.
Atlanta Falcons (8/1 Odds)
If HC Arthur Smith survives the offseason, it’s hard to imagine the Falcons won’t make a push for a veteran QB. The Marcus Mariota/Desmond Ridder/Taylor Heinicke trio has not been able to get the job done over the last two years. It’s going to be challenging for the Falcons to find a stable QB as they’re picking too low to draft one of the better ones. Of course, they could opt for someone like Bo Nix or Michael Penix Jr. but it’s going to be a make-or-break season for Smith, so its more likely he opts to pick in free agency where Wilson would be the best option. He would bring the playoff experience that this team desperately needs to lead the way.
It will be interesting to see where Wilson lands. He’s had a good enough year to show that he can still lead an offense. Statistically, he’s been better than both Lamar Jackson and Patrick Mahomes passing-wise.
