Often times, we see players go into broadcasting or coaching after they have retired. Warriors guard Stephen Curry might go a different route and go into politics. During an interview on “CBS This Morning“, Curry hinted at it being a possibility for him post-NBA.
“I have an interest in leveraging every part of my influence for good in the way that I can so if that’s the way to do it,” Curry clarified. “I’m not going to say the presidency but if politics is a way that you can create meaningful change or if there’s another way outside of politics.”
“If politics is a way that you can create meaningful change, or if there’s another way outside of politics that we can do,” Curry added.
It likely wouldn’t come immediately after he retires from the NBA. He probably would like to have some time afterward to allow his body to recover from what has been one of arguably the best basketball careers in the history of the NBA. He was asked by Jericka Duncan if he’d consider the 2028 presidential election, which he shut down rather quickly.
“Not that soon,” Curry said.
Throughout his NBA career, the four-time NBA champion has been associated with various political figures. The most notable is former U.S. President Barack Obama, whom Curry has golfed with on numerous occasions. Obama was one of the first people to congratulate Curry on his fourth and most recent NBA title with the Warriors.
“To get a call from him and be able to hear his sense of pride and congratulations meant the world,” Curry told ESPN in 2022. “It’s all kind of surreal.”
Stephen Curry graduated from Davidson with a B.A. in Sociology, so a post-basketball career choice in Government politics would not be far off from that. Although, he didn’t rule out the presidential election, he likely would build his way up through the political system.
As of now, the retirement is nowhere in site. Curry is still at the top of his game 15 years into the NBA. His focus is on his team and helping them reach the playoffs. Let us know your thoughts on Curry going into politics.
