After the blockbuster trade, Kevin Durant’s debut for the Phoenix Suns finally arrived against the Charlotte Hornets. Durant played 27 minutes and had a final stat-line of 23 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 assists on 10-15 shooting. Durant and Devin Booker who had 37 points cruised to victory with the final score of 105-91.
Before the trade, Kevin Durant suffered a knee injury on Sunday, Jan 8th against the Miami Heat. As of result, Durant missed two weeks and did not participate in the All-Star game. Ever since then, he’s been itching not only to play for his new team but just to get back on the court. Durant said during his postgame presser he “missed being out on the floor and talking with the guys, camaraderie all that kinda stuff”. Durant asked about how he felt playing with his new teammates and said “I feel like I fit in pretty well. Everybody out there was trying to make me as comfortable as possible”.
No surprise there considering he is coached by Monty Williams who is one of the best in the business and how heavily he was relied upon in Brooklyn. Williams said, “he looked good until he got tired…especially in the second half”. Obviously, Durant’s first game after multiple weeks of absence should not be playing 40 minutes versus a lowly eastern conference lottery team. Williams understands his injury history and his value to the team. This is why it’s a priority to ease him and get comfortable within the system so he could be ready come playoff time. Williams added, “his shot-making” and “quick attacking to the paint” is a refreshing and much-needed addition to the team.
Whether you like it or not, the Suns are a super team. And Durant is once again the top dog. Durability will be key in the final stretch not just for Durant, but for the whole team. Regardless, will see them again Friday, March 3rd against the Chicago Bulls.
