Super Bowl LVIII: Chiefs Super Bowl History

Skyy Moore Fantasy

(Matt Kartozian-USA TODAY Sports)

It’s Super Bowl Sunday and all eyes in the sports world descend on Las Vegas as the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers face off in Super Bowl LVIII. This is the second time these two teams will meet in the Super Bowl, but both have a rich history of Super Bowl success. Let’s look at the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl History.

Chiefs Super Bowl History: Super Bowl I

The Kansas City Chiefs appeared in the very first Super Bowl. Back in 1967, it was called the AFL-NFL Championship game. The Chiefs represented the AFL against the Packers from the NFL. Green Bay dominated Kansas City, basically reinforcing the belief at the time the NFL was superior to the AFL. The Packers won 35-10 with reserve WR Max McGee scoring the first touchdown in Super Bowl history. While a setback for both the Chiefs and the AFL, neither would be denied.

Three years later, the Chiefs returned to the Super Bowl, once again as AFL Champions. Kansas City faced the Minnesota Vikings in the final Super Bowl before the AFL-NFL merger. After the Packers won the first two Super Bowls, the Jets upset the Colts in Super Bowl III. Still, the Chiefs were considered massive underdogs to the NFL Champions. Kansas City made everyone who underestimated them pay. The Chief dominated the game start to finish, winning 23-7. This game proved the AFL teams were ready for the big time against the NFL following the merger.

Following Kansas City’s first Super Bowl victory, the team experienced five decades of disappointment. Finally, the Chiefs made it back to Super Bowl 54 against the San Francisco 49ers. While the NFC Champions led for most of the game, Patrick Mahomes brought his team from behind to secure the franchise’s second Super Bowl championship. The win gave Andy Reid his first championship as a head coach and allowed him to shed his moniker of a coach who couldn’t win the big one. Mahomes was also set up as the QB to most fear going forward, with one more bump left in the road.

One year later, the Chiefs repeated as AFC Champions. The 2020 season was odd in every conceivable way and ended with the Chiefs taking on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Tampa was led by former Patriots QB Tom Brady who was proving he could win without New England. Meanwhile, Tampa became the first team to play a Super Bowl in their home stadium, and it was in front of a limited crowd of first responders due to pandemic restriction. This was arguably Mahomes’ worst game as a professional athlete. Tampa dominated Kansas City from opening kickoff to final whistle, as the Buccaneers won 31-9.

Two years later, the Chiefs again made it back to the Super Bowl. This time, Kansas City ran into the NFC Champion Philadelphia Eagles. The game was back and forth with Eagles QB Jalen Hurts putting up an MVP performance. Still, Kansas City made the plays when it counted, as the Chiefs won 38-35. Mahomes struggled early but came through in the key moments. Meanwhile, the Eagles defense got called for holding on a play that made the ending anticlimactic for what had been a great game to that point. (It was the correct call and even the defender admitted it was holding.) It was the second Super Bowl Championship for Mahomes and Reid and the third for the franchise.

Super Bowl LVIII Prediction

Kansas City faces San Francisco in a matchup most of the media didn’t want, but, from my perspective, looked obvious the second both teams made the conference championship games. I’m expecting a great game between these two teams that comes down to the final score. Still, I’m not betting against the Chiefs. Kansas City gives me similar vibes to what the Patriots did for the past two decades, and the Cowboys did in the 90s. I’m not betting against the Chiefs.
