Taylor Cornelius had to start for the Edmonton Elks against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the Ottawa Redblacks. Trevor Harris had been dealing with a neck injury. The Elks are sitting at 2-5 and dead last in the west. Taylor Cornelius went 22/31 for 334 yards with three touchdowns and two picks against Ottawa. However, he went 19/33 for 243 yards with no touchdowns and three interceptions against Winnipeg in his debut. Both resulted in a loss.
Clock Is Ticking
Harris had been struggling before he got hurt. The offense at times has been stagnant and the ball wasn’t getting pushed downfield. The former Oklahoma State QB was thrown into the fire, but given the team record it may be time to give him more opportunities. Scoring points and giving up points are equally concerning problems for the club right now. Reports say that Cornelius is showing promise and encouraging signs to the coaching staff. A Tough Decision To Make
When Harris is healthy, is it worth the risk to out him back out there? He is a 35 year old quarterback after all. But, if Cornelius keeps getting beat up his confidence will get crushed. This is a player who has good intangibles but hasn’t had a lot of chances to use them. He only started one year in college, played in the XFL before the pandemic began, and now is getting knocked around on a team that does not look very good. The Elks have a lot of work to do to as they gear up for a two game series with the Bombers.
