Trevor Harris has officially lost the Edmonton Elks QB1 title and has been traded to the Montreal Alouettes. The Elks will get DE Antonio Simmons in return.CFL rookie Taylor Cornelius will now take over as the starting quarterback for a struggling Edmonton club. Sending the veteran to Montreal is certainly a bizarre choice.
The Situation
Starter Vernon Adams Jr is on the six game injured list. Adams has a dynamic arm with speed and playmaking ability. Why would they trade for Harris if Adams will start again when he’s back? Harris, who is 35 years old, has struggled this year. Edmonton’s offense has not been able to push the ball downfield that much, and he has turned the ball over. Harris has 6/5 TD-INT ratio so far and he has recently come back from injury.
Montreal is 5-4 and barely hanging on to second place in the east. To think that Trevor Harris is the answer to get them back on track is not a reasonable expectation. Will he become a backup when Adams is ready to come back? If that is the case, then why give up an asset to get him? The offense is not built for a traditional drop back passer. Changing the scheme at this point of the season is not ideal, especially if your going to change it back.
Final Thoughts
Taylor Cornelius now finds himself in a precarious situation taking over a team that at this point is completely out of it.Montreal is trying to fend off Hamilton for second place in the division. This will be something to monitor for the rest of the season. Look on the brightside Montreal, at least you don’t have to worry about Ottawa.
