The Boston Bruins will be hosting the 2023 Winter Classic against the Pittsburgh Penguins in Fenway Park on Jan. 2. It is the first time the NHL has returned to an outdoor venue for its yearly game. The puck drops at Fenway Park at 2 p.m. ET. TNT will broadcast the game nationwide.
Winter Classic History About the Bruins and Penguins
After splitting their first two games, the Penguins will play in their third Winter Classic. Pittsburgh has gone 2-3 in the previous five games played outdoors. However, this is the fourth time the Bruins have played outdoors, having gone 3-1 in their last three games.
The Boston Bruins made their debut in 2010, winning at Fenway Park by a score of 2-1 in overtime over the Philadelphia Flyers. But the second time they played, they suffered a loss of 5-1 at Gillette Stadium against the Montreal Canadians. As for the third, they won against the Chicago Blackhawks a little while ago in 2019 at Notre Dame Stadium.
Famous stadiums like Michigan Stadium, Yankee Stadium, and Wrigley Field have also hosted the Winter Classic.
Before practice on Sunday, the Bruins’ Connor Clifton and Matt Grzelcyk showcased their baseball talents. Also, fashion-forward David Pastrnak and the goaltenders have hinted about what they will wear for the big day.
The Jerseys
According to Boston.com, a tribute to the first spoked-B worn by players in 1948, the arching “BOSTON” on the Bruins’ jerseys will be across the chest. Only “BOSTON” will appear on the jersey for a Winter Classic for the first time, while the arching graphic respects New England amateur hockey. In 2010 and 2019, the Bruins wore a spoked-B in the center of their jersey, while in 2016, they wore a spaced-out “BOSTON BRUINS.” With a gold P spanning the historic white jersey, the Penguins pay tribute to the city’s first NHL team, the 1925 Pittsburgh Pirates.
“I think we’ll put this away pretty quick and start focusing on the great event that’s coming,” Bruins coach Jim Montgomery said. “The Winter Classic is like the Super Bowl of hockey in the regular season, and it’s a great time, it’s a great event, it’s a special event, and it’s going to be at Fenway. So, I think our minds are going to go there pretty quick, and [we’ll] get excited about [the] Winter Classic.” (NHL.com)
It is definitely going to be an exciting game between the black-and-gold teams; only a matter of time to see who will take the victory of the 2023 Winter Classic.
