This feels unimaginable to say. But after ten years of Bayern Munich dominating the Bundesliga, we finally have a season when the championship shield is up for anybody to take. The race for the title is tighter than ever, with only eight points separating the first and sixth place. Let’s look at the leading contenders for this season.
The Reigning Champion
Of course, the team with the best odds of winning is Bayern Munich – the champions of the last ten campaigns. They are not worse than last season by any means. This team is still, if not more, stacked with stars than in previous seasons. But Bayern bumped into quite the trouble in the domestic league this season. Consecutive draws after the World Cup break set them back in the race, while other teams have picked up necessary wins to catch up with them.
That being said, to dethrone Bayern, teams need to go past them first. And Union Berlin knew how it felt like. The record champion thumped the hopeful winner by three goals in the last fixture. And as long as you are not Borussia Mönchengladbach, the ruthless Bayern Munich can destroy you.
Top Three Contenders
Borussia Dortmund
Borussia Dortmund was the last team to win a Bundesliga. But that is the tale of over a decade ago when Jurgen Klopp was still their coach, and Robert Lewandowski was their leading striker. But they are looking to bring back the glory days this year. After the World Cup hiatus, Dortmund has gone on a tear in all campaigns: all wins, zero draws or losses. That impressive form now puts them on level with Bayern regarding points. But consistency is forever a question for this team. Can Marco Reus and Jude Bellingham guide the black and yellow to the championship? We will soon find out.
Union Berlin
Union Berlin has been the most surprising pick this season. They led the Bundesliga for most of the first half of the season but eventually got caught up by Bayern before the break. The team led by Urs Fischer is one of the most challenging defenses and is not afraid of hard contact. But they are still a young team after returning to the German top flight in 2019. Plus, Union Berlin recently defeated Ajax Amsterdam to advance to the next stage of the Europa League, and they need to find better rotations if they want to stay caught up.
RB Leipzig
The last formidable contender on this list is the young team of RB Leipzig. They have always made a bang since booking their tickets to the German top flights six years ago, finishing second in multiple seasons. This year, they are sitting fourth on the table, a point behind Union Berlin and four points behind the leading two. RB Leipzig has been able to build a great attacking football culture and, numerous times, has made it difficult for even European biggest names, with Manchester City being the latest. They are on a roll, and if they can replicate this form in the following months, they are the ones to beat.
The Dark Horses
As mentioned, Bundesliga is a hard-fought battle this year at the top and in the European Cup positions. SC Freiburg and Eintracht Frankfurt are still only a couple wins behind. Not to mention teams like Wolfsburg or Mainz 05 can make an excellent run for a title
Conclusion
Although some fans may not buy that Bayern will lose the reign at the end of the season, the Bundesliga teams this year have shown that they can and have the power to challenge and dethrone the big boss. The battle for glory in Germany is as interesting as in the Premier League.
