After starting the season with a 1-10 record, the Carolina Panthers fired head coach Frank Reich. After dipping into the pool of both college coaches and experienced NFL coaches. Neither have worked out. Recent reports have shown that 14-year NFL Veteran and Fox Sports broadcaster, Greg Olsen would be interested in the Panthers coaching position.
Olsen has had some success as a broadcaster, but the expectation is that he’ll be moved to the No. 2 broadcasting team to make room for Tom Brady. The former NFL Quarterback is set to begin his deal as a Fox Sports broadcaster in 2024. He signed a ten year deal that could affect Olsen.
The Houston Texans received some backlash when they interviewed Josh McCown. The same could happen with the Panthers if they hire Greg Olsen. The highest level of football that Olsen has coached is his son’s Pop Warner team. As you can imagine, that’s nowhere close to the talent level of the NFL. It also doesn’t count for anything. If the Panthers were to hire Olsen and the team didn’t succeed, it could turn fans against the former fan favorite. That would be a recipe for disaster.
The coaching gig appears to be a nightmare with how much there is to fix. Sure, they have a few franchise cornerstones. However, they are going to need a mastermind coaching that program in order to turn the team around. David Tapper is also going to need to learn to be a bit more patient. Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither will a football team.
For now though, Greg Olsen should consider staying as an analyst where he’s had some success. Or perhaps, getting a job at the high school or collegiate ranks if he wants to pursue a career in coaching. He could also go the route that McCown did. After not being hired by the Texans, he became the quarterbacks coach for the Panthers. Olsen could become a Tight Ends coach and work his way up. The experience really isn’t there for the Panthers to consider him yet.
