Reports surfaced back in 2022 that Tom Brady and FOX sports agreed to him being the lead analyst following his retirement. The “greatest quarterback of all-time” was finally going to bestow his knowledge upon the fans on the couch. However, many failed to take into account what this would mean for the current broadcast. Recently we learned that the beloved FOX color analyst, Greg Olsen, is going to be replaced by Brady, the seven-time Super Bowl champ.
At first, there was much confusion as to why Tom Brady didn’t join the FOX broadcast team for the 2023-24 season. The CEO of FOX sports, Lachlan Murdoch, said Brady was set to be added to the broadcast team “immediately”. But he never was. Brady ended up taking the year off from sports altogether after his long 23-year career. He’s been hosting a podcast called “Let’s Go”, and back in a September episode he addressed the lengthy break by saying, “I’ll be on Fox next year, so I have a chance to really sit back and watch and learn a different career.”
It seems as though the “GOAT” is not just trying to be an analyst, but the best analyst. And he’s taking the year to study and learn the craft.
But what does this mean for Olsen? Many viewers reportedly loved Olsen and the knowledge he brought to the broadcast. The style of which he commentated made complicated concepts more understandable to the average fan. This certainly isn’t the end of his analytical career, so many have started to wonder where he will land next.
Will Olsen replace Kirk Herbstreit on Amazon’s Thursday Night Football broadcast? Herbstreit has definitely seemed a bit out of his element ever since accepting the role. Al Michaels has had to do a lot of the heavy lifting to keep viewers engaged. He could also end up staying with FOX, stepping back into the number 2 broadcast during the morning games.
And you got to wonder how much Cris Collinsworth has left in the tank after an illustrious 34-year career of calling games. Ever since Michaels left, Mike Tirico has done an excellent job, but the Michaels-Collinsworth dynamic was so iconic that Sunday night games just haven’t felt the same since. Maybe with Tirico and Olsen in the booth, they could recreate some of the magic Sunday night games used to have with a new, young, fresh set of announcers who could build chemistry over the next few decades.
