The first season with Geno Smith as the QB1 was a wonder. The Seahawks took a gamble on a quarterback with failed starting experiments and for the most part it paid off. The second season not so much. The Seahawks are .500 over halfway through the season and the offense has been stagnant all season. After winning Comeback Player of the Year and getting a nice raise, Smith has seen his touchdown percentage cut by nearly 50 percent and his completion rate drop by nearly five percent.
Currently, the offense ranks in the middle of pack in yards per game and 20th in points per game. That’s not a winning formula by any means.
With Smith at the helm, the Seahawks are middle of the pack. The Seahawks running backs can never stay healthy, so you can’t rely on them. Its time that the Seahawks have a new quarterback that they can build an offense around. Someone that they can trust will keep the offense producing points when the run game ain’t working. The Seahawks have scored 20 or fewer points four times in the past six weeks.
Smith isn’t the only one to blame, the offensive line has not been healthy at all this season. Pete Carroll and company have had to use eight different combinations in 11 weeks. However, let’s be realistic. How long can a young team like the Seahawks stick with a 33-year-old as the starter? Will the Seahawks really stick with Geno as the starter for the rest of that contract?
The championship window for the Seahawks has closed. It’s time to embrace that, the rebuild is coming. Last year, they showed commitment to Geno. They skipped the rebuild and made the playoffs. This season, I’m afraid that can’t happen. They need to find his replacement and their QB of the Future. The Seahawks have multiple options when it comes to potentially drafting a quarterback. One of the three: Michael Penix Jr., Bo Nix or Jayden Daniels could fall to the Seahawks. If neither of them do, the Seahawks could even go after Spencer Rattler. The draft positions are still not set, so its hard to realistically guess who Seattle might have a chance at.
One thing’s for sure though, showing commitment to Geno will not help a few years from now. This year’s draft is once again is loaded with QB prospects. Though, some may say they aren’t as good as years past. The Seahawks certainly don’t need a QB who will take years to develop. They need a quarterback who is smart and who can lead a playoff-caliber team.
