On Tuesday, Rich Eisen reported on his show that the Minnesota Vikings have been linked to Trey Lance in trade rumors.
Dallas Doesn’t Need Lance
The San Francisco 49ers traded Lance to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for a 4th-round pick back on Aug. 25th. However, at the time, the confidence level in Dak Prescott was not high. Coming off a season in which he led the league in interceptions (15), there was growing doubt that the Cowboys would resign him at the end of his contract.
Fast forward to now and Dak is coming off a career year and could become the highest paid player of all-time.
Dallas is now focused on constructing an affordable roster. With an expected cap hit of $22 million, it makes sense that the Cowboys want to move on from Lance. In steps Minnesota.
Minnesota is Reeling After 2023
The Vikings are coming off a very disappointing season. After starting 0-3, Minnesota was able to claw back to 4-4 on the back of a three-game winning streak. Unfortunately, it came at the cost of losing Kirk Cousins to an Achilles tear. Somehow, they were able to keep the run going behind stellar play from Joshua Dobbs to get to 6-4. But a bad final two months left them at 7-9 and outside the playoff picture.
The Vikings- a team that had Super Bowl aspirations at the beginning of the season is now in danger of losing their star QB. With Cousins being a favorite to sign with the Falcons, Minnesota has all but said their final goodbyes.
A Trey Lance, Cowboys-Vikings trade makes a ton of sense. If Dallas can get a 3rd round pick for Trey, they will accept it immediately. And while head coach Kevin O’Connell once before expressed excitement in 5th round rookie backup, Jaren Hall, Lance is undoubtedly an upgrade.
Lance is a former 3rd overall pick who has flashed before. In 2022 he was supposed to be the center of the San Francisco offense. Instead, his season ended early due to a nasty ankle injury. It’s the unfortunate reality of being an NFL quarterback. One day you’re the next big thing, then a bad injury happens and all of a sudden, you’re a backup.
Lance Could Still be Good
But there’s still plenty to be excited about with Lance at 23. He fits perfectly in today’s NFL as a dual threat QB. Trey has also spent his only years in the league studying great offensive systems. His football IQ is more than likely higher than it was last time we saw him.
With receiving weapons like Justin Jefferson and TJ Hockenson, and rookie breakouts Jordan Addison and Ty Chandler– Lance would be a great fit with O’Connell and the Viks.
