By now, we know the newest USA beach volleyball team of Kelly Claes and Sarah Sponcil are very good at what they do. The team defeated the Brazilian team of Ana Patrícia Silva Ramos, and Rebecca Cavalcanti Barbossa Silva. The victory came in three sets. Now, the USA beach volleyball duo is at the top of the pool. Officially, all four American teams will be moving on to the next round to compete for a medal. Additionally, Cales and Sponcil have yet to lose a match. The first two sets were identical. Set one was even with Brazil going on a 4-0 run near the end to secure the win. On the flipside, the US won the second set the exact same way.
Third Set and Big Picture
The US got off to a 6-1 run due to a flurry of errors by Brazil. Just when it looked like it was over, Brazil came back in the set to make it 11-8. An out of bounds serve sealed it 15-11 and secured Claes and Sponcil the fourth overall seed. Both female teams from the US are in the knockout bracket, but on opposite sides. If both teams go the distance, an American team showdown for the gold medal could be possible like in London. The opponents have not officially been released yet. But, the real test will now begin for the team USA. Not just for Claes and Sponcil, but for all four teams.
