Vikings Dalvin Cook Trade Rumors

The Minnesota Vikings and Dalvin Cook are rumored to be parting ways before the 2023 NFL season. Cook has spent the last six seasons as the premier back for the Vikings when healthy after they drafted him in 2017. In that time, he accumulated a total of 5,993 rushing yards, 47 touchdowns, and an average of 4.7 yards per carry.

When asked about the situation with Cook, GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah clarified the situation is fluid. He made is clear all possibilities are on the table.

“Conversations are always ongoing with him,” Adofo-Mensah said at pre-draft press conference. “We’re trying to be solutions-oriented, always trying to put the roster together within our constraints.”

Cook will make $10.4 million guaranteed at the start of the season, something Minnesota is assumably not too keen on paying. They’ve already signed running back Alexander Mattison to a two-year, $7 million deal earlier this offseason. The Vikings and Dalvin cook will likely have to work together on a new contract with another team if they want to trade him. If they can’t trade him, it’s not out of the question they could release him to save the cap hit. The Miami Dolphins are the current betting favorites to land Cook whether that’s by trade or through free agency.

When asked about the Dolphins rumors, Cook’s agent Zach Hiller didn’t deny the interest and even hinted that the rumors are true.

“I mean, the media is always off on the draft, but the media is not always off on the actual team news,” Hiller said. “They’re not misleading.”

The Vikings do have flexibility with when they choose to go about their decision. However, if they want a running back in the draft, they probably want a deal done sooner rather than later. There is also time for the two parties to rework the contract into something that works for both sides. Cook expressed interest into staying with them early this offseason.
