The Minnesota Vikings announced they will part ways with four-time pro bowl running back Dalvin Cook, Thursday. They are working on making a trade, but will process his release if nothing comes to fruition before Friday.
Drafted in 2017, Cook has dealt with multiple injuries but has been amongst the league’s best running backs when healthy for the Vikings. The 27 year old was set to make $14.1 million against the cap for Minnesota. It will still cost $5.1 million in dead cap space if they finalize the release. Since 2019, Derrick Henry is the only running back to average more rushing yards per game. Cook has amassed 5,993 rush yards in his six seasons. He’s also been a good receiver, catching 30 or more passes in each of the past five seasons.
Potential landing spots
Cook is already drawing interest from multiple teams around the league. It doesn’t seem that a trade is realistic given his contract, so teams will wait until he’s a free agent. The Miami Dolphins and Denver Broncos have both reportedly shown interest in Cook. He would likely look to go to a contending team, as his life-span in the league may be running dry.
The Dolphins have a crowded running back room, as Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson dominated the workload last season. The Broncos have Javonte Williams, but with his injuries and inconsistent play, could use another option. The Dallas Cowboys have also been rumored to show interest in Cook. After releasing Ezekiel Elliott, Tony Pollard will be the guy for them. Cook could solidify that backfield and be a good option for them.
