Tuesday night, the College Football Playoff Committee released their first rankings for the 2022 season. There were some things they got right and some they got wrong. All in all, the committee seemed to do a pretty good job in their season debut.
College Football Playoff Rankings – The Top 3
In their first set of rankings, the committee’s top three were Tennessee, Ohio State, and Georgia, in that order.
Though controversial to some, this was the correct ranking by the committee. Tennessee should be ranked ahead of Ohio State and Georgia due to their impressive wins.
Tennessee has beaten LSU, Alabama, and Kentucky this season and two of those were blowouts. Meanwhile, Ohio State doesn’t have any wins over currently ranked opponents and Georgia’s lone ranked win comes against Oregon.
All three of these teams very good and very close in terms of talent. Of course, Georgia will play Tennessee this weekend so next week’s top three will look a little different.
The Bottom Half of the Top Ten
The College Football Playoff Committee’s six through ten rankings left some fans scratching their heads.
For example, TCU being ranked behind Alabama makes no sense, whatsoever. The Crimson Tide are a one-loss team with their only ranked win being an unimpressive escape job at Texas in Week 2.
Meanwhile, TCU is undefeated with two ranked wins over Kansas State and Oklahoma State. The Horned Frogs also boast a top-five offensive and has one convincingly against lesser opponents, unlike Alabama.
Also, Clemson being ranked ahead of Michigan seems a little absurd. Clemson has barely escaped against teams ranked in the bottom of the poll on three separate occasions.
Michigan, on the other hand, has won convincingly in every game on their schedule and has looked the part more than Clemson has.
Lastly, LSU has no business being in the top ten. Just in terms of talent and eye test, Penn State at 15 and Kansas State at 13 have both looked better against good competition than LSU.
Even though LSU beat them head-to-head, Ole Miss should be ranked ahead of the Tigers. For starters, the game they played was in Death Valley. If that game were on a neutral field, Ole Miss most likely wins that game. In addition, the overall roster talent for the Rebels is superior to that of LSU.
College Football Playoff Rankings – Penn State at 15
The Nittany Lions come off a close loss at home against number two, Ohio State. Penn State led at many points in this game but just couldn’t stave off a really talented Buckeyes squad.
Coming into last week, Penn State was tenth in the AP Poll, after their loss they drop five spots to 15.
There is no legitimate reason Penn State should be penalized this much for losing to a team that, on paper, they should have lost to. To boot, they played them very closely and almost won.
The Nittany Lions should have stayed right where they were, if not they should’ve dropped maybe a spot or two.
Kentucky Outside the Top 25
This season has definitely been a bit of a disappointment for the Lexington faithful. The Wildcats have fought through injuries and a tough schedule to get to a respectable 5-3.
Two of the Wildcats’ three losses come against top 11 teams, Tennessee and Ole Miss. their other loss was against South Carolina with starting quarterback, Will Levis, on the sidelines.
Kentucky has two decent wins against Florida on the road and against Mississippi State. They also only lost by a field goal on the road to 11th-ranked Ole Miss.
Led by NFL-caliber talent all over the roster, particularly at the skill positions, Kentucky is definitely worthy of a spot in the CFP rankings.
The Wildcats have definitely shown they are better than some of the teams at the bottom of the poll like Tulane or UCF.
