We warned you that even though this looked like a slow week in College Football, that we could still get some surprises. And that we did! A huge upset by Purdue over Iowa, Kentucky finally takes a loss, and other powers like Alabama and Oklahoma keep trucking along!
Here are my final words on College Football week seven.
As Purdue said “They beat the No. 2 out of Iowa”
For the second time in four years, the Boilermakers were able to beat the No. 2 team in the country as they beat Iowa 24-7 on Saturday.
Much like when Rondale More went off as Purdue upset second-ranked Ohio State in 2018, the Boilermakers were led by a spectacular performance by their star wide receiver, as David Bell carved up the Hawkeyes – who allowed just 274.2 total yards per game in their first six games of the season – for 240 receiving yards and a touchdown on 11 catches.
This time, however, the Boilermakers upset the No. 2 team in the country on the road, beating the Hawkeyes in Kinnick Stadium just one week after Iowa defeated Penn State, 23-20, in a battle of top-five-ranked teams in Iowa City.
With Saturday’s win, Purdue has now beaten a team ranked in the top two of the AP Top 25 as an unranked team for the ninth time in program history – more than double that of any other school. Purdue now has the fith-most wins over AP top-2 teams of any school.
The Boilermakers improved to 4-2 and 2-1 in Big Ten play with Saturday’s win, while the Hawkeyes fell to 6-1 and 3-1 in Big Ten play, leaving just two unbeaten teams in the conference through seven weeks: Michigan and Michigan State. Purdue and Iowa are now two of three one-loss teams atop the Big Ten, along with Minnesota.
21 Observations From College Football Week Seven
LSU Finally Looks Good In A Win – Yet Ed Orgeron Is Still Being Replaced
- Ed Orgeron, who led LSU to the 2019 National title, will not be brought back as LSU’s head coach this season, less than two years after winning a championship. As great as that team was, the teams before and after that season just left a lot to be desired. You have to think that Joe Burrow and Joe Brady are now getting more of the praise for that title.
Iowa’s Offense Finally Caught Up To Them
- Iowa’s seven points were the fewest by a top-two team at home against an unranked team since Texas against SMU in 1980.
Oklahoma State’s Defense May Be One Of The Best In The Country
- Oklahoma State held Texas to six yards in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Longhorns 16-0 in the period in a 32-24 comeback win.
The Woe’s Continue For Nebraska
- Scott Frost is 5-17 in one-possession games at Nebraska, including 0-5 this year.
The Once Proud TCU Defense Has Fallen Apart
- TCU has allowed 200 rushing yards in four consecutive games, as many times as the past three seasons combined.
Colorado State Kicking
- Colorado State kicker Cayden Camper made five field goals for the third time this season. The rest of the country has two such games.
Dillon Doyle Had A Day
- The Baylor linebacker had four tackles, one sack, one rushing touchdown and one receiving touchdown. No player has done that since at least 2000.
Mississippi State Needs A Rushing Attack
- Mississippi State finished with 300 passing yards but 299 total yards in a loss to Alabama. You can’t be that one dimensional in the SEC.
101 Dalmatians Plays
- Ole Miss ran a school-record 101 plays in it’s 31-26 win at Tennessee. That included 39 passes and 62 runs.
QB Jack Tuttle Struggled
- Indiana QB Jack Tuttle became the third FBS player since 2000 to throw at least 52 passes for fewer than 190 yards.
Boise State Is Having Tough Times At Home
- Boise State has lost three home games in a season for the first time since 1998.
Favorites Want No Part of ULM
- ULM became the second team to win two games in a season as an underdog by at least 23 points. The Warhawks were a 33-point underdog to Liberty on Saturday but won 31-28. They were also a 23.5-point underdog against Troy. ULM is now 3-3 in Terry Bowden’s first season. The Warhawks were 0-10 last year and didn’t lead in a single game.
Another Flag On The Play
- North Texas had 17 penalties for 161 yards in a loss to Marshall. The 17 penalties are the most by an FBS team this season, and the 161 yards are the second-most by any team over the past two seasons.
That QB Is Still Running
- On Saturday, Ohio quarterback Armani Rogers had a 99-yard touchdown run against Buffalo.
Transfer Candidate Anyone?
- Eastern Washington QB Eric Barriere passed for 600 yards in a 71-21 win against Idaho.
Georgia Continues To Look Like A Beast
- Georgia had their toughest test of the season against Kentucky, and won 30-13. It might just be their year.
Cincinnati Added Style Points
- In what was expected to be a decent opponent in UCF, the Bearcats just dismantled them. They need to do this the rest of the year, but I think they will and they will make the playoff.
Bryce Young Is Back on the Heisman Track
- He finished 20 of 28 for 348 yards and four touchdowns and looks to be back on track. He has to win from here on out.
Oklahoma Looks To Be Oklahoma Again
- Caleb Williams’ stat line in his first career start — 18 of 23 for 295 yards and four touchdowns through the air, 66 yards and another touchdown with his legs. Oklahoma’s offense looked great again, and this team is looked playoff bound.
Add Kenny PIckett To The Heisman List!
- He has thrown for 2,000 yards, 21 touchdowns, and one interception. If you could get rid of that Western Michigan loss than he may be the front-runner.
The Utes Won In Honor Of Their Fallen Teammates
- The Utes attended Aaron Lowe’s funeral in Mesquite, Texas, earlier this week. On Saturday, they fell behind 21-7 to Arizona State, then scored 28 straight points to fell the No. 18 Sun Devils. Utah has been a completely different team since Cam Rising took over for Charlie Brewer, and with No. 9 Oregon looking shakier by the week, the door is open for this to be a truly special season.
