Last year, WFT QB Taylor Heinicke went from unknown backup quarterback to “The Legend”. This year the “Legend” became the starter. Even he admitted it felt different.

Speaking to media on Monday he said, “It’s a different feel from all the previous years. When you go through a season like we did, it’s been a rollercoaster. A lot of adversity, a lot of hard work and fighting with these guys….so at the end of the year it kinda sucks. You’re sitting there at your locker, and there’s a lot of ups and downs throughout the year and you reminisce on all those memories, and it’s crazy that it’s already over.”

Washington (7-10) looked rough the first half of the 2021 NFL Season. They lost the home-opener and their original starting QB Ryan Fitzpatrick. The losses started piling up early. Coming off their bye Week 9 they went on a four-game winning streak. Heinicke bested league veterans from Tom Brady, Cam Newton to Russell Wilson. For a moment you almost forgot he had never played a full season in the NFL.
But injuries and COVID-19 turned a resurgence into a four-game losing streak. The 20-16 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles (9-7) knocked them out of playoff contention. Sunday’s 22-7 win Sunday against the New York Giants(4-13) showed there was still potential. In the end, they lost one too many. Heinicke finished the day completing nine for 120 yards. He finished the season completing 321 for 3,419 yards, 15 interceptions, and seven fumbles.

The Legend of Taylor Heinicke: Is it over?

Monday was not about the season, it was about the future. Heinicke talked about doing better in his workout routine and learning more. He admitted the season went fast for him, and not being in the playoffs hurt.

“It’s a tough deal”, he told the media. He didn’t talk about the future away from Washington. Why would he? He has no reason to feel ashamed. There’s only one way to know if he’ll be back next season: Treat this offseason like a Marvel movie. Good or bad, everyone has to wait until they see the final end scene after the credit roll to know the movie is officially over. Only then will we know if he returns or becomes the legend he’s already known to be. More than likely, he’ll still be WFT QB Taylor Heinicke. No one knows where he will be on the depth chart though.
