Multiple teams leaked that they won’t be pursuing Lamar Jackson after the Baltimore Ravens placed the exclusive tag on their 2019 MVP quarterback Tuesday.

To negotiate with Jackson, a team would need to trade away two first-round picks to the Ravens unless Baltimore decides to match the offer within the five-day limit.

This has left many people around the league questioning what’s going on as teams are avoiding a proven 26-year-old quaterback after many of the same teams were in the running for Deshaun Watson in the 2022 off-season, who had issues on and off the field. The Carolina Panthers, Atlanta Falcons, Washington Commanders, Miami Dolphins and Las Vegas Raiders were the teams who leaked their stance on pursuing Lamar Jackson.

They’re always questions about Jackson’s arm and throwing ability, but the stats speak for themselves as he’s become one of the greatest dual-threat quarterbacks in the NFL.

The trade debate around Jackson has risen from the Ravens struggling to agree on a contract extension with their supposed franchise quaterback. Jackson is his agent, and his mother is a part of the negation process, which is unique because agents represent most players. Another aspect is the amount of guaranteed money on the contract as Watson set a new standard with a $230 million fully guaranteed contract. Jackson was scheduled to be the next franchise quarterback to be paid, with other young quarterbacks such as Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert and Trevor Lawrence expected to receive big paydays.

There have been hints at possible collaboration amongst the teams supposedly opting out of trading for Jackson as it was a sudden agreement between all the teams. With free agency starting Wednesday, it seems that the league is looking to avoid paying a quarterback another fully guaranteed contract, as Jackson will look for those circumstances.

In the end, Jackson is worth the money and two-first round picks as these same teams avoiding Jackson are also looking to trade up in the draft for an unproven rookie instead of the 2019 MVP. Through all the controvery, Jackson gets the short end of the stick as he’ll be forced to negotiate lower than his means with the Ravens or another possible team.
